Deductible amount
Which rate applies
The rate depends on why you drove, and in 2026 on when: the IRS raised the business rate from 72.5 to 76 cents per mile for miles driven on or after July 1, 2026. It does not depend on what you drove: the same business rate applies to gasoline, diesel, hybrid and fully electric vehicles.
Medical and moving miles are worth far less than business miles, and the moving rate is available only to active-duty members of the Armed Forces. The charitable rate is fixed by statute rather than set by the IRS, which is why it has stayed at 14 cents for years.
All four rates, with the IRS source, are on the IRS mileage rate 2026 page.
Tolls and parking
Add them on top. They are the only vehicle costs you may deduct alongside the standard mileage rate — gas, insurance, maintenance and depreciation are already inside it.
A number is not a record
The calculation is the easy part. What an audit examines is your log: for every trip, the date, the miles, the destination and the business purpose, recorded at the time — not rebuilt from memory the week before filing.
